January Featured Maker and Pattern: Chevron Points by Julie Burton of Running Stitch Quilts
Welcome to a new year of Modern Service Quilts! We’re so excited to be back from our winter break to introduce a new designer and pattern for the new year. January’s collaborator is Julie Burton of Running Stitch Quilts!
Julie’s featured quilt pattern, our January pattern of the month, is Chevron Points (printed pattern or digital PDF). For the month of January, Julie will be donating 75% of the proceeds from the pattern to Team RWB. Read on for this month’s chat with Julie about her collaboration with Modern Service Quilts!
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your quilting journey?
My name is Julie Burton, and I am the designer behind Running Stitch Quilts. I currently live in Michigan with my husband, our two daughters, and our two dogs. I started quilting in 2014 after I bought a sewing machine on a whim. I was looking for a new hobby and quickly fell in love with quilting. I am primarily self taught using blogs and Pinterest to figure out what to do. Because I was teaching myself, I started out doing my own quilt math to make basic HST-style baby quilts. That naturally transitioned into writing my own patterns and starting RSQ in 2018.
Why did you want to collaborate with Modern Service Quilts?
My husband is active duty in the Army. His service is very important to our family, and I love giving back to the community in whatever way I can.
Do you have your own personal connection to the military, service members, or the tradition of making honor quilts?
Yes! My husband is in the Army. I remember looking into Quilts of Valor when I first started quilting, and I love that Modern Service Quilts is bringing a fresh approach to honor quilts.
This month, we’re highlighting your Chevron Points quilt pattern. Why do you think this particular design lends itself well to becoming a modern honor quilt?
Chevron Points is a bold design with lots of options in making the pattern. The vertical chevron pattern is reminiscent of certain ranks.
Do you have any other patterns you think could work well as honor quilts?
Scrappy American Flag and Snowflakes in July are two that were written with a patriotic theme in mind. Aside from those, Chevron Stars and Mountain Valley would make a great honor quilts!
Do you have any tips for making a quilt pattern appropriate for an honor quilt?
Don’t be afraid to branch out of the traditional red, white, and blue to include a complementary color like teal or yellow!
You’ve chosen to support Team RWB with your Chevron Points pattern sales this month. What led you to choose that particular charity?
Fitness (specifically running for me!) is an important part of my family’s life. My husband and I have both participated in Team RWB events, and we have friends that are active in the Team RWB community. It is a great organization that focuses on both physical and mental heath for veterans through community events and camaraderie.
