MSQ’s Hello, Geese! Quilt

This month, we’ve been sharing lots of fun photos of the process of making our Hello, Geese! sample over on our Instagram feed. In this post, we’re going to dig into all the details of our sample quilt!

Leila’s pattern comes in three sizes with a scrappy and ombre option for each. We made the Small Throw size — a perfect couch throw — and obviously embraced the ombre. The large throw is almost a twin size, so it’s a great option for a taller recipient, or add a border or more geese for a true bed quilt.

This sample was a true group effort. Jessica chose the fabrics and knew that Vanessa Christensen’s ombres were the perfect pairing with this pattern from the start. Since the pattern specifically includes instructions for ombre fabrics, it was a no-brainer to take full advantage of these bright, modern options (Ombre Fairy Dust Metallic by V & Co for Moda Fabric in Cherry, Nantucket (Blue), and Sand). The pattern is written to use a different color in each column of geese, but to stick with the red, white, and blue theme, we doubled up on the red and blue, an easy adjustment to make. The background is an off-white Moda Bella solid.

Christine then took charge of piecing the quilt, and what a fabulous job she did, right?! She also had fun creating a few additional mockups for inspiration!

Lilo quilted our sample using the Modern Curves panto by Anita Shackleford. She ran the pattern vertically, which really enhances the lines of the geese in their flying pattern. Christine then finished off the quilt with a favorite Carolyn Friedlander crosshatch fabric and big-stitch sewing for the binding.

The backing is one of our favorite flannels, Robert Kaufman Organic Mammoth Flannel in Americana. Flannels make wonderful backings for honor quilts because their softness and warmth is like a loving hug, and this one perfectly mimics the range of hues in the fabrics on the front.

If you can’t wait another minute to make your own version, head on over to Leila’s store to grab your copy of the pattern. And don’t forget Leila is donating 100% of the proceeds from the pattern this month to Disabled American Veterans, so pick up a copy of the pattern now to stretch your impact for some very worthy veterans. You can check out this post for lots more about Leila’s collaboration with MSQ. Happy quilting!

Photos of the finished MSQ quilt were taken by Angela Armstrong. Progress photos taken by Jessica and Christine.
