MSQ’s Mighty Stars Quilt

This month, we’ve been sharing lots of fun photos of the process of making our Mighty Stars sample over on our Instagram feed. In this post, we’re going to dig into all the details of our sample quilt!

Fran’s pattern comes in an amazing six sizes, so with your vet in mind, you can choose from two couch-throw sizes or any bed size you could want.

This sample was dreamed up by Kristy, who wanted to take advantage of the great color range in Ruby Star Society’s Hole Punch Dot basic. She combined the red, navy, and gray versions with a white solid.

Stars always make a solid choice for an honor quilt, but the twisting ribbon effect of the Mighty Stars pattern adds something new to the traditional star, almost like the star is being wrapped up. It also adds some lovely movement to the quilt, especially when you choose colors that offset the color used for the star, as Kristy did with the red and navy surrounding the solid white star.

Lilo quilted our sample using a panto called Wonky Skyline. It’s a great combination of lines and curves and a great choice for filling in the space when you have blocks with big open spaces like these stars. For the binding, Kristy used the gray Hole Punch Dot basic again — a subtle but effective finish.

And can we just take a second to look at this fantastic backing Kristy used? It’s an older Denyse Schmidt print she had in her stash, and it’s just so perfect. Always check out the clearance section at your local quilt shop; you never know what perfect backing you might find!

If you can’t wait another minute to make your own version, head on over to Fran’s store to grab your copy of the pattern. And don’t forget Fran is donating 40% of the proceeds from the pattern to K9s for Warriors, so pick up a copy of the pattern now to stretch your impact for some very worthy veterans. You can check out this post for lots more about Fran’s collaboration with MSQ. Happy quilting!

Photos of the finished MSQ quilt were taken by Angela Armstrong. Progress photos taken by Kristy.
