MSQ’s New Direction Quilt

This month, we’ve been sharing lots of fun photos of the process of making our New Direction sample over on our Instagram feed. In this post, we’re going to dig into all the details of our sample quilt!

Amber’s pattern comes in three sizes. We made the Throw size, which is nice and long for those who want a couch quilt that cover the toes of even the tallest people, but the Queen would be a great option for anyone wanting to make a bed quilt.

For this quilt, Lilo decided to bring in a new color that we haven’t used in any of our other samples, a wonderful olive green that not only brings to mind camo fatigues but also adds depth to the blues and tans with which she paired it. This colorway is both distinct and calming. The fabrics in the quilt top are mostly from Alexia Abegg’s Heirloom collection, with that great olive Speckled fabric from Ruby Star Society mixed in.

But, of course, this simple modern design would look great in all sorts of color combos that would work well for an honor quilt. In fact, Amber’s cover quilt is red, white, and blue!

Lilo quilted our sample using the Flying Geese pattern by Crystal Smythe. This fun pattern obviously mimics the flying geese in the quilt design, but its curves also add a lot of movement to the quilt top and break up the straight lines nicely. For the backing, Lilo chose a beautiful textured woven from Alexia Abegg’s Warp and Weft collection and then finished off the quilt with a navy binding using one of the Heirloom prints from the quilt top.

If this bit of loveliness has you wanting to jump in and create your own version, then head on over to Amber’s store to grab your copy of the pattern. And don’t forget Amber is donating 100% of the proceeds from the pattern this month to American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER), so grab your pattern now to stretch your impact for some very worthy veterans. You can check out this post for lots more about Amber’s collaboration with MSQ. Happy quilting!
