MSQ’s Striped Ribbon Star Quilt

This month, we’ve been sharing lots of fun photos of the process of making our Striped Ribbon Star sample over on our Instagram feed. In this post, we’re going to dig into all the details of our sample quilt!

Satomi’s featured quilt pattern (paper pattern or digital PDF) includes four sizes, offering plenty of options for a recipient of any size or taste. For our version, we made the 62” square large throw, which you can see is plenty generous.

This sample was dreamed up by Kristy, who decided on a simple all-blue color scheme that really highlights the stars. For the quilt top and binding, she selected two Moda Bella solids in Nautical and White. The additional print fabric is an out-of-print blue dot from her stash (an older Cotton & Steel print). The pattern is written for multiple colors, but Kristy loved the idea of simplifying it to just two colors, so she mostly relied on the pattern diagrams and layout to assemble her top. Due to the limited color palette, she also chose to use a simple sashing center block instead of the hourglass block used in the pattern. It’s always fun to make a pattern your own!

Lilo quilted our sample using a panto called Patchwork from Sew Shabby. How amazing is that texture?! She doesn’t have it up on her site yet, but you can always request it or go for Christmas Basket, which has a similar feel (or one of these great texture pantos).

To bring some extra softness to the quilt, Kristy used a Primo Plaids Flannel in Blue by Marcus Fabrics for the backing. We have said many times how much we love the texture and snuggle factor that a good flannel brings to the back of a quilt.

For the binding, she used the same Moda Bella solid in Nautical to allow the binding to just blend into the borders of the quilt. Sometimes using your binding to frame the quilt top is the right choice, but often, the design is really enhanced by making the binding just disappear. It also allows for an easy machine binding finish, which is a great bonus when you’re ready to get a quilt project wrapped up.

If you’re inspired to make your own version, head on over to Satomi’s shop to purchase your own copy of the Striped Ribbon Star pattern (paper pattern or digital PDF) by March 31. And don’t forget Satomi is donating 75% of the proceeds from the pattern through the end of the month to K9s For Warriors, so pick up a copy of the pattern now to stretch your impact for some very worthy veterans. You can check out this post for lots more about Satomi’s collaboration with MSQ. Happy quilting!
