Welcome to Modern Service Quilts!

There’s nothing new about making quilts for veterans, but we noticed there was a real disconnect between the modern quilting movement and the quilts typically made to honor those who have served our country. So after numerous discussions last year, we decided to step up to try to bridge that gap, and before we knew it, Modern Service Quilts (MSQ) was born. We’re so glad to welcome you on this journey!

Starting in June, each month, MSQ will feature a modern quilt pattern that's just perfect for a fresh new take on the traditional service quilt. We're so excited about the fantastic modern quilt designers who are collaborating with us, too! (You can read all about them here.) The selected quilt pattern will be made up in a new palette appropriate for a modern service quilt to give makers ideas, and along the way, we'll provide tips on selecting palettes and alternative fabrics that nod to the patriotic purpose of a service quilt without screaming "Independence Day."

We also wanted to be sure that MSQ gave back in more ways that quilts, so we've highlighted a number of veterans' organizations that focus on veterans' issues and groups that need more attention and are near and dear to our own hearts, including non-profits focusing on female, minority, LGBTQ, and disabled vets. During their highlighted month, each of our collaborators will be donating a portion of the proceeds from their selected pattern to one or more of the organizations we've highlighted on the MSQ website.

We hope that this project will encourage more modern makers to use their talents to give back to worthy veterans in their families, social circles, and communities. We'd love to see a modern quilt in the hands of every veteran. If you want to participate but don't have a specific vet in mind for your quilt, there are a number of worthy organizations who accept donations; you can find more information about donations on the website as well.

We can't wait for you to see what's in store. In the meantime, be sure to follow us on Instagram for some sneak peeks. See you in June!
