MSQ’s Slice Is Right Quilt

Hopefully, you’ve been drooling over all the colorful photos of our Slice Is Right sample that we’ve been sharing over on our Instagram this month. In a big switch from last month’s patterned, textured Kris Kross quilt, this time, we broke out the solids for a bold, fresh aesthetic. In this post, we’ll share all about the sample we made!

Ben’s pattern comes in four different sizes, from a throw down to a mini quilt, meaning it works well as a quilt for your favorite veteran to cuddle under or even as a commemorative wall quilt. We made the throw size, and boy do those big strips go together quickly!

Our sample was pieced by Christine Boyd using fabrics that the whole MSQ team worked to pull together. Solids were an easy choice for the striking visual of this quilt. We used Robert Kaufman Kona solids in Prussian, Surf, and Red, combined with Moda Bella solids in Country Red and White. The backing is a Carolyn Friedlander Architextures Crosshatch in Cadet. (You’ll see this fabric pop up in next month’s quilt, too. It’s a really great blue blender for modern service quilts — even the color name says so!)

If you want to branch out a bit from the red, white, and blue, these mockups from Christine offer a fun look at what other solid versions could look like. Blue is an obvious choice, but don’t overlook using neutrals too! Creams, tans, and khakis would look great in this design.

And as we mentioned in our interview post with Ben, he was also generous enough to do some mockups of two of his other quilt patterns that would also make amazing honor quilts. Aren’t they fabulous? While you’re in his shop, you might as well get a copy of Warp Speed and Wild Geese That Fly, too.

Part of the reason we wanted to highlight the Slice Is Right pattern was because we thought the design was reminiscent of a fighter jet, making it perfect for an Air Force veteran. Lilo Whitener-Fey of Trace Creek Quilting mimicked this idea in the quilting, which introduces a wavy, windy movement to the design and breaks up the straight lines with some curves.

Christine also added the final finishing touch to the quilt with our favorite big-stitch binding. Don’t you love how those big white stitches just pop on the red binding?!

If you’re inspired to jump in to create your own version, then head on over to Ben’s store to grab your copy of the pattern. And don’t forget Ben is donating 50% of the proceeds from the pattern for the month of August to American Veterans for Equal Rights, so grab your pattern this month to stretch your impact for some very worthy veterans. You can check out this post for lots more about Ben’s collaboration with MSQ. Happy quilting!
