MSQ’s Starship Quilt

We hope you’re all as excited as we are about this month’s pattern, Starship by Sarah Holst. It’s a very beginner-friendly pattern that opens itself up to so many interpretations. In this post, we wanted to share more about the sample we made!

Sarah’s pattern includes three options for the design: (1) using a feature fabric for the stars, (2) using a feature fabric for the background, and (3) scrappy! As you can tell, we decided to go the scrappy route, but the options included in the pattern mean this quilt can go in SO MANY different directions. It also means you can pull from your stash in lots of different ways, depending on the fabric you have on hand.

Our sample was pieced by Kristy Daum, who pulled from her own stash to gather a really scrappy assortment of red, blue, and low-volume white fabrics. She obviously had a lot of variety to choose from, but if you’re hoping for a scrappy look but have a smaller scrap stash, consider asking friends if they have scraps they can share. Most quilters would love to lighten their scrap load!

You can also tweak the quilt based on the colors you have in your stash. Have a lot of blue and very little red? It would look great to do most of the stars in blue fabrics and just one or two in red, making them really “pop.” You could also combine scrappy color pieces with a solid white, off-white, or cream for the background or star pieces.

The fabulous quilting, which evokes the pinwheels often seen on the 4th of July, was done by Lilo of Trace Creek Quilting. The E2E pattern, called Skipper, was designed by Leisha Farnsworth. Lilo also put the finishing touches on the quilt with the binding, a great dark blue that really frames the whole composition.

These mockups from our Web Designer, Christine, give you a taste of what an all-solids version of Starship might look like. Pretty great, right? And this design can really look so different depending on whether you use the colors in the stars or the background. This is definitely a pattern that can be used over and over again with very different results.
